Clashes in north Nigeria kill 35

The military said in a Monday statement that in the violence which erupted in the northeastern town of Bama after an attack on a police base, one policeman and 17 militants were killed.

The statement added that two soldiers and 15 militants were also killed in fighting in the town of Malam Fatori following an assault on troops.

Both towns are located in Nigeria’s Borno state, which is the stronghold of Boko Haram militant group.

The army said the militants were armed with “sophisticated weapons” and explosives during the attacks.

Over the past four years, violence in the north of Africa’s most populous country has claimed the lives of about 3,600 people, including killings by the security forces.
