The Cairo Criminal Court on Saturday sentenced 21 people to death over the death of 74 people in February 2011 in a violent soccer riot in Port Said.
The incident took place after fans of home side Al-Masry clashed with Cairo’s Al-Ahly in the city, sparking days of violent protests in Cairo, in which another 16 people were killed.
Following the court’s verdict, violence erupted outside a prison in the city where many of the defendants in the fatal soccer riot case are being held.
Relatives of those sentenced to death tried to storm the prison, leading to fierce clashes with security forces.
According to a Saturday statement by Egypt’s Interior Ministry, 200 people were wounded in today’s violent Port Said clashes. It added that two security officials were among those killed and that there were “many critical injuries among police forces.”
Cairo Criminal Court is set to announce its ruling on the remaining 52 soccer riot defendants, who include nine policemen, three officials and those who allegedly used the opportunity to stoke unrest, on March 9, 2013.
