The gap between Labor and the Coalition has narrowed slightly in a new opinion poll out today, but the Coalition maintains what would be an election-winning lead.
The Newspoll, published in The Australian, says Labor’s primary vote has increased by two points to 32, while the Coalition’s primary vote has dropped two points to 48.
On a two-party preferred basis Labor gained three points, up to 45 per cent, while the Coalition slipped three points to 55 per cent.
Voter satisfaction with Opposition Leader Tony Abbott’s performance declined four points to 35 per cent.
Satisfaction with Prime Minister Julia Gillard was virtually unchanged at 28 per cent.
The fall in Mr Abbott’s satisfaction rating is the first since November, when dissatisfaction with Mr Abbott was 63 per cent.
But the poll says he remains preferred prime minister over Ms Gillard.
Support for Ms Gillard as preferred prime minister went from 35 per cent to 37 per cent, as backing for Mr Abbott fell to 40 per cent.
The Greens’ primary vote returned to its 2010 election level of 11 per cent, up one percentage point.
The poll has a 3 per cent margin of error.
