nsnbc : The administration of President Juan Miguel Santos and the Colombian Federation of Educators (FECODE), representing over 300.000 educators, have struck a deal that ends the “Teachers Strike” that has brought hundreds of thousands of educators to the streets and the country’s education system to a stand still since May 14.
The deal between the government and FECODE means that Colombian educators will resume their educational activities and restart the country’s educational system. The deal was struck after several ours of intense negotiations, reports FECODE.
FECODE President Luis Gruvert, earlier told media that the government should improve the education system of the country and modernize the evaluation of teachers. Gruvert added, that the government needs to work on solutions instead of suspensions.
The strikes were prompted by a number of unresolved disputes, some of them stretching back several years. Among the core issues behind the teacher’s strike were low wages, poor health care and health insurance, as well as issues with the evaluation of teacher’s competency.
The initial announcement that a deal had been struck that ends the strike came via FECODE’s Twitter account. The details about the agreement have not yet been published.
On May 14, the strike was announced, with FECODE President Luis Gruvert stressing that the strike was open-ended. Thousands of Colombian teachers in the capital Bogota and cities throughout the country mobilized and marched, bringing parts of the metropolis’ traffic to a standstill.
It is noteworthy that the deal was struck only days before Colombians are heading to the polling stations in the country’s presidential elections, on May 25.
