A man who was convicted of cheating on his taxes got lucky for a change and won millions of dollars in a lottery jackpot, according to press reports in New York.

The Long Island man who was accused of not paying taxes for five years was announced yesterday as a winner of the $5 million lottery jackpot.

Doctor David Shaffer, a podiatrist working in Flushing, Queens, will take home $3.1 million, after tax, after scratching the winning ticket of a $5 million grand prize.

State tax authorities hit Shaffer with four felony counts several years ago for failing to file tax returns from 2002 to 2007. He owed $13,419 in back taxes, according to a press release from the Department of Taxation and Finance.

He eventually pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor and agreed to pay compensation, a department spokesperson said.
Shaffer, 61, called winning the lottery a life changer during a morning event in Manhattan.

He bought two tickets during a coffee break. The second ticket contained the grand prize.
He has no plans to quit his job, but he said that he will now have more time for his hobby, which is writing songs.

“Now I can concentrate on writing songs instead of working all day,” Shaffer, a podiatrist for the past 31 years, said. “It seems that 2013 will be my year,” he added.
