A husband and wife who funded a lavish ‘Premiership’ lifestyle with the proceeds of crime have been jailed.
Richard and Lisa Smith wanted for nothing, splashed out on a £20,000 wedding, spent nights at a luxury spa and had a large collection of designer clothing and jewellery
Despite earning less than £20,000 a year between them, the couple drove around in an Audi S3 and £45,000 Range Rover and could afford to pay out £17,000 for private dental work.
Jailed: Richard Smith, who started a £1.2m fire and fled to Spain after being sprung from a security van, and his wife Lisa Smith lived a champagne lifestyle
They funded their lifestyle with close connections to the underworld where Mr Smith mixed with criminals.
After being arrested last year on suspicion of causing a massive £1.2m fire at a vehicle recovery yard Mr Smith was sprung from a prison van as he was being taken to court.
He fled to Spain where he continued his criminal life using a series of close underworld contacts.
Smith was arrested six months later on the Costa Blanca, where Spanish police suspected he was planning a robbery.
He was sent back to Britain to face charges of arson, escape and money laundering.
During the subsequent investigation, officers found the couple lived an ‘extravagant’ lifestyle in spite of Smith being on £15,000 a year and his wife claiming benefits.
Caught out: The couple enjoyed their wedding reception at the five-star Lowry Hotel in Manchester, where they were observed mixing with criminals
Police said that a DVD of their wedding ceremony and celebrations at the exclusive Lowry Hotel in Greater Manchester showed that the couple knew a large number of well-known criminals.
Last week Smith, who has a previous conviction for manslaughter, was jailed for 11 years while his wife was jailed for 18 months for money laundering and fraud.
As she was being sentenced she collapsed in court wailing: ‘No, no, no, what am I going to do?’ Smith embraced her and said: ‘Babe, you will be alright’.
Manchester Crown Court heard that Smith and Jared Jones and Karl Taylor smashed their way into the Vehicle Recovery Services building in Walkden, Greater Manchester, in June, 2009 and burned it to the ground.
It is thought that their target was a BMW M5 which Jones had crashed and abandoned earlier that day.
Smith and Jones’ boss at a car rental firm wanted the damaged vehicle destroyed in an insurance fraud and detectives also believed the BMW could be linked to an armed robbery.
Smith and some associates smashed their way into the Vehicle Recovery Services building i Manchester, in June 2009 and burned it to the ground – in a bid to destroy a BMW M5 which Jones had crashed and abandoned earlier that day
Detectives investigating the case seized a DVD from the Smiths’ home titled ‘The wedding of Lisa Gilmore and Ricky Smith’.
The couple tied the knot at Salford cathedral before a lavish bash at the Lowry Hotel and the footage showed Smith alongside armed robbers Patrick McDonagh and Rickton Henry.
Police discovered the wedding cost more than £18,000 with the cake alone costing £755. The weddings rings alone cost £6,500.
Harvey Nichols vouchers worth £500 were bought on the day of the wedding and were found in Mrs Smith’s £620 Gucci handbag when officers executed the warrant at their house.
Following their wedding, the Smiths spent two nights at a luxury spa on The Wirral and spent more than £1,300 on their stay.
Police officers investigating the case said they were living like a Premiership football couple.
Detective Sergeant Simon Akker said: ‘The Smiths were living a lifestyle and driving around in cars that many honest hard-working people only ever dream of.
‘This money undoubtedly came from criminality as neither had any discernible legitimate income that could fund such extravagant spending.’
