The Western New South Wales Local Health District has assured Cowra residents, there are no plans to close the town’s chemotherapy unit.
The Federal Liberal Member for Hume, Alby Schultz, has raised concerns about the ongoing viability of the unit and is concerned it is staffed by just one nurse, forcing patients to Orange when she is away.
He says he is ashamed and disgusted at the State Government’s treatment of the oncology unit.
Mr Schultz says the Cowra Cancer Action Group has raised over $25 000 for the unit, purchasing basic office equipment.
Acting Director of Operations at the Health District, Joy Adams, has issued a statement saying the unit is staffed according to need at this time.
She says the Cowra nurse is given support from a nurse who travels from the Orange Health Service.
Ms Adams says an additional nurse, based in Cowra, is completing a cancer care course and once qualified will be able to provide holiday relief and ensure ongoing services at Cowra.
