WE ALL thought it was the first time Tom Cruise had broken his silence on his divorce from Katie Holmes. Turns out, he was just referring to his career.
Hundreds of websites got overly excited overnight with the news that the 50-year-old Mission Impossible star had finally spoken publicly about his failed five-year marriage.
It was widely reported that Cruise opened up in a recent interview with German television network ProSieben, saying he “didn’t expect it” when Holmes, 34, filed for divorce in June 2012.
With the former couple’s divorce being finalised on July 9, 2012, less than a week following the actor’s 50th birthday, Cruise reportedly went on to explain that the separation gave him “an incredible amount of time to reflect”.
“To be 50 and have experiences and think you have everything under control, and then it hits you. That’s what life is … life is tragicomic.
“You need a certain sense of humour,” the star told ProSieben interviewer, Steven Gaetjen.
But Gaetjen has since come forward to deny reports Cruise was referring to his marriage breakdown, telling People.com he never even quizzed him about Holmes or the very public divorce during the interview.
Gossip Cop is now reporting that many of Cruise’s comments were taken out of context and were actually answers to questions about his professional life.
A rep told the site that much of what was circulating online was “made up”.
The former couple married in November 2006 and share six-year-old daughter, Suri.
Cruise, who is currently in Europe promoting his new sci-fi film, Oblivion, now has three divorces under his belt. He divorced his first wife, Mimi Rogers, in 1990 after three years of marriage, and divorced Nicole Kidman in 2001 after 11 years together.
