“In the Hague, when there was a vote on the decision on the role of the OPCW (Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons) in implementing the program of chemical weapons destruction in Syria, a special clause was inserted urging all countries which have not yet done so to sign the convention,” Sergey Lavrov said on Monday.
Lavrov added that the clause would contribute to establishing a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction.
“I will reveal a little secret: this clause was introduced by Iran and supported by the United States. Iran in the past century, has twice suffered from chemical weapons. I think Iran offered a very sound addition,” the Russian foreign minister added.
The UN Security Council on September 27 unanimously approved a resolution to avert a US-led military strike against Syria. The resolution condemned the use of chemical weapons in the country and called for their elimination.
During a meeting at The Hague earlier on Friday, the OPCW Executive Council approved a timetable on the annihilation of Syria’s chemical weapons by mid-2014, paving the way for the UNSC resolution.
A 20-member OPCW team of inspectors are scheduled to travel to the Syrian capital Damascus on Tuesday, where they will begin the elimination procedure.
