The Danish Teachers Union reported that some 6,000 teachers lined up on Tuesday along the main road, demonstrating against a decision by municipalities to close almost all primary and secondary schools after several months of negotiations over working hours failed on April 1.
“We want to show that teachers are united and that we are ready to fight. Whether it is a month or two months. We are here and we are ready,” said teacher and co-organizer Nikolai Gunnarson.
It is reported that the Danish Teachers Union rejected a new labor pact by the local government association.
The main point of difference is employers wanting to scrape fixed rules about how many working hours a teacher should set aside for preparing classroom teaching.
Instead, they call for each school to have the right to determine for itself the amount of preparation time.
Due to the lockout, about 67,000 teachers across Denmark do not have access to their work place and some 875,000 students are not attending school.
