A section of the Christmas Island detention centre was placed in lockdown after a brawl between detainees at the weekend.
The Department of Immigration has confirmed there was a disturbance on Sunday night in the section which houses asylum seeker families and Indonesian crew members.
The department says staff acted quickly to restore order.
Several detainees were treated onsite for injuries and it is understood the section was then locked down.
A source has told the ABC that tensions remain high after the incident.
However, Immigration Department spokesman Sandi Logan says detainees are now calm.
The Christmas Island centre currently houses more than 2,500 people awaiting immigration determination.
