Dick Cheney: Barack Obama ‘taking us in the wrong direction’

Former vice president Dick Cheney had some harsh words for Barack Obama in an April 8 interview on Fox News. Cheney said that the successor to the White House will have a tough time after Obama leaves office due to the president’s misguided policies. (See YouTube video)

I happen to think Barack Obama’s taking us in the wrong direction. I think his health care policies and so forth, nationalizing the health care system or something close to it, 16 percent of the economy — that we’re going to have — whoever replaces him is going to have some very difficult tasks ahead of them.

Last year, the former vice president told ABC News that Obama is ‘one of the weakest presidents ever’.

I obviously am not a big fan of President Obama. I think he’s been one of our weakest presidents. I just fundamentally disagree with him philosophically. I’d be hard put to find any Democratic president that I’ve disagreed with more.

Last month, Cheney’s daughter Liz wrote on the Wall Street Journal that “Obama is the most radical man ever to occupy the Oval Office”.

On April 8, Dick Cheney paid tribute to the late Margaret Thatcher who passed away at the age of 87 after suffering a stroke on Monday. According to Cheney, Thatcher’s policies worked because they contained and pushed back a socialist agenda advanced by Britain’s Labor Party. Speaking about the former British prime minister, Cheney said: “I had enormous respect and regard for Prime Minister Thatcher. She was a great lady but a tremendous leader, too.”

According to an April 8 Forbes report, the real unemployment rate in the United States is 14.3 percent, and not the 7.6 percent figure cited by the Obama administration.

  • There is another 0.6 percent of discouraged workers (about 800,000)
  • Another 0.9 percent have mostly stopped looking for a job recently
  • Another 5.1 percent of the workforce are working only part-time and would prefer to have a full-time position (8 million people)

Last week, the U.S. Department of Labor said that in March, the unemployment rate dropped from 7.8 percent to 7.6 percent. However, that’s because “the civilian labor force declined by 496,000 over the month, and the labor force participation rate decreased by 0.2 percentage point to 63.3 percent”. Under the Obama administration, the labor participation rate is at its lowest level since 1979.

On April 6, a day after the weak jobs numbers was announced, President Obama largely ignored the Labor Department’s report in his weekly radio address, opting instead to present an optimistic assessment of the U.S. economy:

Now, yesterday, we learned that our businesses created 95,000 new jobs last month. That’s about 500,000 new jobs this year, and nearly 6.5 million new jobs over the past three years.

Businesses may have created 95,000 new jobs in March but many experts believe that most of those are part-time jobs. Nearly half a million Americans still left the workforce in March, most of whom were unable to get full-time employment.
