Eight diggers returning home to Australia have instead been sent back to Afghanistan after they were caught drinking during a stopover in Dubai.
The eight soldiers either failed a breath test or admitted to drinking alcohol while on a shopping trip in the Arab emirate, breaking Defence Force rules, the ABC reported.
Rather than returning to Australia as planned, the troops were sent back to Afghanistan to be dealt with by their commanders.
They will return to Australia once the matter is resolved.
“Defence does not tolerate unauthorised alcohol consumption by deployed personnel and those found in breach of this policy will face administrative or disciplinary action,” a spokesperson told the Herald Sun.
“Defence must also take into account its relationship with our host country and their expectations of the ADF’s standards of behaviour.”
The troops will stay on their base in Tarin Kot while the issue is being investigated.
