Regarding Syria, Mr Medvedev hinted Russia’s patience with Bashar al-Assad was
wearing thin, but the emphasis should be on making sure the situation did
not descend into all-out civil war.
“Despite differences in emphasis, the positions of Russia, the US and
Britain are not as sharply different as sometimes suggested. We all start
from the position that the worst outcome would be a full civil war in Syria,”
he said.
He said that Mr Assad’s position “must be decided by the Syrian people”,
but he reiterated Russia would not accept foreign intervention.
Mr Medvedev also praised Barack
Obama, saying that the US had helped Russia enter the World Trade
Organisation and the countries had worked towards reducing their nuclear
arsenal.
And on the Olympics, the Russian prime minister praised the opening ceremony,
saying that his favourite part was Rowan Atkinson’s Chariots of Fire cameo
as Mr Bean.
“It was quite funny, and I didn’t expect to laugh during the opening
ceremony.”
