Dozens of people have been killed and several wounded in a shooting spree by militants in a coastal town in Kenya.
The attack was carried out late Sunday, when some 50 heavily-armed men opened fire on the people around the town of Mpeketoni from two minibuses.
The attackers also set fire to two hotels where local residents were watching World Cup matches.
The gunmen also targeted several restaurants, banks, police stations and government offices.
A local police officer said: “The number of bodies taken to the mortuary is 47, while one has died in hospital.”
“Attackers hijacked a van from Witu town, which they used for the attacks. They raided Mpeketoni police station first and opened fire,” said Mpeketoni area administration police chief Hamaton Mwaliko. “Some hotels in the town are on fire. We don’t know how many casualties are there for now. We understand the attackers have already fled but our officers are pursuing them.”
Mpeketoni is a small but busy port city some 30 kilometers southwest of Lamu Island.
Kenya’s security officials blamed the attack on members of the Somalia-based al-Shabab militant group.
Kenya currently has over 4,000 army soldiers stationed in southern Somalia, where they have been battling al-Shabab. Kenya sent troops into Somalia in late 2011, after al-Shabab fighters carried out a series of raids inside Kenya. The Kenyan forces are part of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), which gets training and equipment from the United States.
