A LATE-night drunken swim almost ended in tragedy for two Victorians at a Sydney beach last night.
The two men – both from Footscray in Melbourne’s western suburbs – got into difficulty when taking a dip near Manly Surf Club about 10.50pm.
They had earlier been refused entry into a hotel because of their intoxication, NSW police said.
A 25-year-old female companion raised the alarm.
Police said the woman was “distressed” when they arrived on the beach, saying her two friends had not come out of the water and she had lost sight of them.
An air and sea search involving police and local surfers was sparked and about 15 minutes later a 21-year-old man was found unhurt in the water not far from the shore.
He was assessed by paramedics on scene as a precaution.
Searchers found a 22-year-old man struggling in the water about 500m east of the surf club about 30 minutes later.
He was brought to Manly Wharf by a Marine Area Command launch and assessed by paramedics before being taken to Manly Hospital for further treatment.
NSW Police urged people not to go swimming at night, especially after consuming alcohol.
“Alcohol was definitely a factor,” a police spokesman said.
