Police and the state government have thanked Queensland drivers for making the Easter weekend the safest since 2004.
One person died on the state’s roads over the five-day holiday period, well down on last year’s total of six fatalities.
“Overall, we’d like to thank Queensland motorists who, in the majority, not only obeyed the road rules but appropriately drove to the busy conditions,” Police Minister David Gibson said in a statement.
“… One fatality represents a much better result than the six that were killed in 2011.
“However, it is still one life, one circle of friends, and one family that has been tragically and permanently affected.”
A woman died on Sunday after her motorcycle collided with a car west of the Gold Coast.
Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson says overall driver behaviour was good, but some motorists still weren’t getting the message.
Police conducted 50,000 random breath tests and nabbed 400 drink-drivers over the break.
Just over 8500 motorists were snapped by speed cameras, and police booked a further 5000 drivers for exceeding the speed limit.
Eleven people died on the nation’s roads over Easter.
