Ed Sheeran says a country album might be in his future, praises Hunter Hayes

British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran is not your typical teen-pop heartthrob. With his flaming red hair and his penchant for memorable melodies, he marks himself as the boy-next-door type — who just happens to be best friends with global superstar Taylor Swift. While out on the road on the sold-out Red Tour, Sheeran is making fans and gaining much-needed exposure to an American audience. Along the way, the guitar-toting musician has crafted a performance set that most opening acts can only dream of.

He might be making pop music, but he admits to Yahoo! Music that a country record might be in his future. His collaboration with Swift, titled “Everything Has Changed,” is currently witnessing a sales surge, thanks in huge part to a remixed version.

“Country music is some of the best-written music in the world,” he says. “So yeah, one day, I would keep my mind open to doing a country record.”

He adds, “Hunter Hayes has some sick music. There’s so much good country music out there.”

While it is unclear when Sheeran might put together a country-focused collection, he will (no doubt) be accepted with open arms by the Nashville community.

Last month (July 12), Sheeran performed on “The Today Show” to throngs of screaming fans, all decked out in orange in honor of his “+” album. He says of the experience, “The ‘Today’ show was pretty mental. I have seen a lot of people do those concerts on TV and I think that 10,000 kids turned up today. That’s a lot of people to be in one space.”

During the televised performance, the 22-year-old debuted his Signature Edition guitar, in partnership with C.F. Martin & Co. “I get to have a guitar that I customized, that I play live at shows, that goes on sale for my fans and all the proceeds go to charity,” he explains. “[East Anglia Children’s Hospices] is really close to my home and my mum helps out there. I think that it’s important to give to good causes, but it is also important to invest back into the community you came from.”
