According to a single chapter of a report compiled by a committee selected by Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, more than 1,000 people, including prisoners, went missing during the 18-day revolt that resulted in the ouster of Egypt’s dictator Hosni Mubarak.
“This chapter sheds light on new and extremely disturbing incidents that implicate the military in serious human rights violations,” said Hossam Bahgat, director of the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights.
The report, not yet completely released to the public, has also recommended the Egyptian government to investigate the military’s highest ranking officials in order to determine those responsible for the revolution-era crimes against civilians.
“The committee recommends investigating the leaders of the armed forces about the issuance of orders and instructions to subordinates who committed acts of torture and enforced disappearance,” the report stated.
Hundreds of people were found and identified at morgues with signs indicating they were killed or tortured. The fate of scores of Egyptians still remains unknown.
The findings of the high-level report contradict the Egyptian military’s initial claims that it held a neutral position in the revolution.
The report also mentions the disappearance of an unknown number of people at a checkpoint on a road south of the capital, Cairo.
“The committee found that a number of citizens died during their detention by the armed forces and that they were buried in indigent graves, as they were considered unidentified,” the report added.
Egypt’s new constitution, backed by Morsi, gives the country’s military sole authority to investigate its own officials. However, the prosecution of soldiers is impossible by law.
Many Egyptians complain that the new government has failed to establish a ministry to assist the families of those still missing, making it almost impossible to find traces of their loved ones.
