Egypt’s counter-insurgency offensive, begun under Morsi, intensifies

WASHINGTON — Egypt assigned an Army general in May to head the counter-insurgency mission in the Sinai Peninsula, a report said.

The Washington Institute for Near East Policy identified Gen. Ahmed Wasfi as the chief of the CI campaign in Sinai in the spring of 2013.

Wasfi has been battling increasing attacks by Sinai Bedouins, in some cases backed by such tribes as Breikat, Sawarka and Tarabin.

Author Ehud Yaari said the CI campaign led by Wasfi began under then-President Mohammed Morsi in May 2013. But the offensive intensified after the military ouster of Morsi in July and included the deployment of additional Egyptian forces and MBTs.
