Egypt’s Public Prosecutor accuses Police Officer of slaying Activist Shaimaa Shabbagh

nsnbc : Egypt’s public prosecutor announced on Tuesday that the prosecution accuses a police officer of the fatal shooting of activist Shaimaa al-Shabbagh during a peaceful rally on January 24. The rally was held to commemorate the victims of the January 25, 2011 uprising in Cairo’s Tahrir Square that led to the fall of the Mubarak regime.

A news blackout was ordered after the fatal shooting of the activist, one day before the anniversary of the January 25 revolution. The news blackout was allegedly ordered so as not to interfere with the investigation. The breaking news about the prosecutor’s decision to charge a police officer was reported by The Cairo Post on Tuesday.

The independent Egyptian news channel Youm7, an affiliate of The Cairo Post, captured the moments immediately following the shooting of al-Shabbagh. The images showed a police officer behind her carrying a shotgun. (see image to the left)

The rally was held in circumvention of Egypt’s protest law which is being much criticized in Egypt.

The criticism is widely echoed by western media, without mentioning that rallies in all EU member States only can be held legally, after applying for a permit for a rally, at a particular location and with an estimated max number of people.

The peaceful rally held by Shaimaa al-Shabbagh and other activists on January 24 was held to honor the victims of the 2011 uprising of Egyptians in Cairo’s Tahrir Square.

The Cairo Post’s Nourhan Magdi reported on January 26, 2015, that photos captured by Youm7 show the march being dispersed by security forces and members of the police behind al-Shabbgh holding rifles, shotguns and tear-gas cannons.

Egypt’s Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim responded to the incident by holding a press conference. Ibrahim stressed that if any member of the security forces were responsible for Shabbagh’s death, he would be tried. Ibrahim added at that time that it was too early to make specific allegations.

During the first week of March 2015, Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim was replaced by General Magdi Abdel Ghaffar. The replacement came during a surprise cabinet re-shuffle of President Al-Sisi’s administration. Mohamed Ibrahim, for his part, was reassigned to his post as security adviser to Egypt’s Prime Minister.
