NABLUS, (PIC)– Palestinian prisoners’ families have complained against the ill-treatment of the Israeli occupation during their visits to their sons in Israeli prisons.
At each visit to the Israeli jails, where thousands of Palestinian prisoners are held, Israeli authorities practiced harassment against the prisoners’ families in an attempt to pressure them and their detained sons, Ahrar Center for Prisoners’ Studies stated.
One of the most important problems faced by the prisoners’ families is the delays on the road, where the families are forced to wait at the checkpoints for long hours as vehicles carrying Palestinians have to queue for checks by occupation soldiers.
In addition, the Israeli forces only open one entrance, forcing the families to wait for hours to pass through the checkpoint despite the presence of elderly people.
The families told Ahrar center that the situation inside the Israeli prisons is terribly bad where there is no place to sit in or any public facilities.
The prisoners’ families also suffered from the long waiting to see their sons, where they are gathered in a wide square to allow groups of them to enter, after taking their visit’s permits.
Some families are forced to remain till the evening and to reach their homes in the middle of the night in many cases.
The families also complained against the violent and humiliating strip searches especially against women, in addition to waiting for long periods.
The prisoners’ families also told Ahrar center that on many occasions the Israeli soldiers tore visit permit apart under false pretexts and forced the visitor to return either at the checkpoint, or when he reached the prison after an arduous journey.
The center pointed out to the Israeli provocative practices during the visit, where they deliberately delay bringing the prisoners to the visiting room to waste time, in addition to the manipulation with the phone used between the prisoner and the visitors, like raising and lowering volume or making the line crackly.
For his part, Fuad Al-Khuffash the director of Ahrar center said that the visit journey turns often into humiliating one to the prisoner and his family due to the Israeli provocative and brutal practices.
Khuffash called on the Red Cross the mediator of the families’ visits to intervene to stop the Israeli violations against prisoners and their families.

“On Torture” is an edited volume of essays by Palestinian, Israeli and international legal and medical experts and practitioners based on presentations that they gave during a workshop held in Jerusalem in April 2011 entitled, “Securing Accountability for Torture and Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment (CIDT) in Israel: New Trends and Comparative Lessons”.
The essayists explore the history of torture in Israel, the daily challenges that practitioners face in seeking accountability for torture and CIDT in Israel, and the changing face of torture.
