In a press release, the FBI said that they have arrested Sweetwater Mayor Manuel “Manny” Marono and Miami Lakes Mayor Michael Pizzi from their respective offices as they were involved in kickback and bribery schemes.
The FBI had received separate complaints saying that the mayors and two lobbyists were involved in separate schemes of federal grants for Medley and Miami Lakes and Sweetwater. The mayors now face charges of extortion under pretention of official right.
Wifredo A. Ferrer, U.S. Attorney expressed disappointment saying that democracy suffers when, elected officials, who were meant to use their power and political influence for public good, use it for personal gain instead.
Manuel “Manny” Marono, became mayor in 2003 while Pizzi, elected in 2008 is in his second term as mayor.
Marono, currently serving as president of the Florida League of Cities, had a role in transition team of Gov. Rick Scott in 2011.
Pizzi, who is also an attorney, had once worked for criminal defense firm in Miami.
