Four dead in Louisiana school bus crash

A sport utility vehicle collided head-on with a school bus in Louisiana Saturday, killing the SUV’s driver and three of its four passengers, police said.

State police said the fourth SUV passenger and seven teenage students and a man aboard the bus, which was carrying the Lafayette High School baseball team, suffered moderate injuries, the (Baton Rouge) Advocate reported.

The four victims who died were identified by state police as Ladonna Cheatham, 36, of Patterson, and Marcus Cheatham, 16, Destiny Cheatham, 6, and Dwayne Escort, 7. Police said they were not wearing restraints and were ejected from the vehicle.

Troopers said a 17-year-old who was in the SUV, Mark Cheatham, was wearing a seat belt.

State police said the SUV was westbound on US 90 in St. Mary Parish about 11:40 a.m. when its left rear tire failed, causing it to veer across a median into the eastbound bus’ path.

The bus was carrying 30 students and five adults to a game. UPI
