France begins the second round of municipal elections, which is seen as a referendum for the ruling Socialist party.
Voters in the capital, Paris, and other cities headed out to polling stations on Sunday.
The far-right National Front (FN) is expected to make significant gains in the voting for mayors and municipal counselors in 36,000 villages, cities and towns, following a surprising turnout of voting last week.
Analysts say the Socialist party, led by President Francois Hollande, faces an uphill battle amid the president’s record-low approval ratings and a string of embarrassing scandals.
The opposition UMP party is said to be able to gain control of around 100 city halls following the poll results, which reflects growing dissatisfaction with the government plans to improve economy and control the rising unemployment rate.
Hollande is expected to make an announcement highlighting major changes in the cabinet following the announcement of the municipal vote results.
Socialists are hoping to maintain presence in Paris. Socialist party member Anne Hidalgo, who is the deputy mayor of Paris, is expected to defeat rival Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet from the UMP party. Her triumph will hold the capital under Socialist control for another six years.
In January, thousands of protesters marched through the streets of the capital, Paris, in protest against poor performance of the Hollande administration.
The French president, who took office in May 2012 with pledges of economic and foreign policy reforms, has become the most unpopular French president on record as he has failed to fulfill the promises he made during his election campaign.
