Things, it seems are only getting worse.
The recession in France will be worse than previously thought, it was
announced this morning, while unemployment, at 11.5 per cent, is at an
all-time high and the national debt is reaching 94 per cent of GDP.
Politically, Mr Hollande is having a nightmare. His prime minister is
considered feeble and ineffective; his strongest minister was fired after
admitting to owning a secret Swiss bank account while the other cabinet
heavyweight Manuel Valls, the interior minister and top cop, has been
accused of woeful amateurism for allowing notoriously violent PSG football
fans to congregate in central Paris – ending in a riot.
Cabinet in-fighting reached new heights this week when the foreign minister,
Laurent Fabius, suggested the finance ministry was like a headless chicken
in need of “a boss”.
The same, the French are saying with increasing clarity, could be said for the
country.
