Fugitive mafia gunman arrested in London

Techegne allegedly took place in the armed robbery of a car hire agency in Naples in which a police officer was shot.

The officer, Vincenzo Truocchio, 36, was seriously injured in the hold-up and died in hospital nine days later despite efforts by surgeons to save him.

Techegne managed to flee the country and establish a new life in the UK under at least two aliases.

He was living in a flat in Old Pye Street, Westminster, in central London.

When he was arrested on Tuesday he was carrying a large quantity of cash in sterling and a false British passport.

He was remanded in custody after appearing at Westminster Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

He is expected to be extradited back to Italy, where he will face charges of murder, armed robbery and possession of firearms which carry a sentence of at least 15 years in prison.

Techegne is alleged to be a member of the Licciardi clan of the Camorra, the mafia based in Naples and the surrounding region of Campania.

Anti-mafia police in Naples said the arrest was the culmination of a joint operation between Interpol, the Serious Organised Crime Agency and the Metropolitan Police.
