GOVERNOR-GENERAL Quentin Bryce will be on hand to preside over any constitutional crisis triggered by Labor’s ongoing leadership brawl.

The vice-regal envoy will spend most of the next ten days in Canberra, limiting her travel to two overnight stays in Sydney and Brisbane – and another short trip to Sydney next Tuesday for Hazel Hawke’s memorial service.

Ms Bryce raised eyebrows in February 2012 when she flew to New Zealand for a five-day visit – in the midst of the Gillard Government crisis triggered by Kevin Rudd’s resignation from the ministry.

While she was overseas, Ms Bryce delegated her role as head of state to the NSW governor, Marie Bashir.

However, Ms Bryce – who returned from an overseas trip last Sunday – will be within easy reach of the national capital over the next ten days, as Labor MPs weigh up whether to dump Ms Gillard as Prime Minister.

The Opposition has also threatened to use the continuing Labor turmoil to test whether the Government continues to have sufficient support in the House of Representatives.

A decision to move a no-confidence motion against the Government would require the crossbench MPs – who backed Ms Gillard in 2010 – to declare whether they still supported the minority government.
