A man riding on a New York City subway was attacked because he was gay as other passengers looked on, according to press reports in New York.
The gay man, who was identified as 23-years-old, was attacked on the subway in Manhattan as a crowd of passengers looked on and did nothing to help him.
Urena Morel Frankelly and his partner were inside a southbound number 2 train Monday night when a woman took a picture of them eating while her friend called them names.
“Why did you take a picture?” The victim asked the woman.
“Feed you face f***,” the suspect yelled back along with another woman, who asked the couple: “Why you with that f***?”
An argument erupted and the two women, joined by three other men started attacking Frankelly, police said.
His partner tried to intervene, but the victim was beaten repeatedly.
The pair managed to get off the train at the next stop, on West 96th Street, and police were called.
The victim was left with an eye that was swollen shut and a cut above the eye socket. He was treated at St. Luke’s Hospital.
“Everyone was watching and no one helped us. That was a very alarming situation for us,” the couple said.
No arrests have been made.
