People gathered in the Israeli-blockaded Gaza Strip on Thursday in a ceremony attended by Palestinian officials.
The event was organized by the Turkish human rights foundation, IHH, the owner and operator of the flotilla ship, Mavi-Marmara, which was the scene of the deadly onslaught by Israeli navy commandos two years ago.
Meanwhile in Istanbul, tens of thousands were expected to join a rally to commemorate the nine Mavi-Marmara victims.
The rally comes days after a Turkish court handed down indictments against former Israeli army chief, Gabi Ashkenazi, and other senior officers, holding them responsible for the deaths of the Turkish nationals on the blockade-busting flotilla.
On May 31, 2010, Israeli navy commandos attacked the six-vessel fleet from dinghies and helicopters while the convoy, aimed to break Tel Aviv’s years-long siege of the Gaza strip, was still in international waters.
Nine Turkish nationals were killed in the attack, which drew condemnation from the UN Security Council and mounted pressure on Israel to slightly ease its blockade of Gaza.
The incident has seriously strained ties between Israel and Turley, as Israel has so far refused to apologize to Turkey for the deaths, claiming that its troops acted in self-defense.
