Gaza’s sole power plant has returned to work after the delivery of fuel necessary for its operation, the Palestinian power authority said Saturday.
Operating the power plant means that Gaza’s houses will have electricity for longer hours, according to authority deputy chairman Fathi Khalil.
He told The Anadolu Agency that Gaza’s houses would have electricity for eight hours that will be followed by eight hours of outages.
On Wednesday, the Palestinian government earmarked $10 million – out of $25 million donated by Qatar – to buy the fuel necessary for the operation of Gaza’s power plant for 15 days, the power authority said.
Electricity outages used to last for 20 hours every day in Gaza because of the absence of the necessary fuel for the operation of the Palestinian territory’s power plant.
The use of primitive lighting and warming methods had caused several crises in Gaza’s homes in the past months, including the death of two children earlier this month.
The Gaza Strip requires 360 megawatts of electricity – of which only 200 megawatts are currently available – to meet the needs of its roughly 1.9 million residents.
Gaza currently has three sources for electricity: Israel, which provides 120 megawatts; Egypt, which supplies 28 megawatts; and Gaza’s power plant, which generates between 40 and 60 megawatts daily.
