Germany backs Ukrainians freedom fight

Germany has voiced support for Ukrainians’ “fight for freedoms,” says a Ukrainian opposition leader.

Member of parliament and former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk met German President Joachim Gauck and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier on the sidelines of the international Munich Security Conference on Friday.

Yatsenyuk said, “Our German partners expressed their words of support to the Ukrainian people in their fight for freedoms and liberties.”

Ukraine’s opposition leaders are also set to meet US Secretary of State John Kerry on Saturday.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin has called the US top diplomat’s upcoming meeting with the major figures of the opposition a “circus.”

“It’s also necessary to involve Verka Serdyuchka in the talks,” he tweeted on Friday, referring to a popular Ukrainian drag queen character. “Her/his authoritative opinion should be heard by the White House and taken into account,” he said sarcastically.

Anti-government demonstrations in Ukraine erupted after Yanukovych pulled out of a deal with the European Union, which could have paved the way for Kiev to join the bloc.

Yanukovych refused to sign the agreement at the third Eastern Partnership Summit in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius on November 29, 2013 after European Union leaders called on Ukraine to allow jailed opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko to travel overseas for medical treatment.
