‘Germany fails in migrant murders probe’

German security services and domestic intelligence have for years been riddled with widespread institutional bias, preventing them from detecting crimes committed against Turkish and Greek migrants, German parliamentary panel chairman Sebastian Edathy said Thursday.

“We have concluded that we are dealing with massive institutional failures that resulted from a dramatic underestimation of the danger of the violent far-right in Germany,” said Edathy.

The committee filed an almost 1,000-page report condemning the country’s security services for associating terrorism only with far-left or Islamic groups, while underestimating far-right groups including the neo-Nazis, National Socialist Underground (NSU).

The report documented major failures and organizational flaws in determining the racist nature of NSU murders.

NSU members murdered 10 people from 2000 to 2007 without being caught, the report noted.

The neo-Nazi crowd is now listed as a terrorist group, with its surviving member Beate Zschaepe on trial for lending support to the group’s two gunmen who died in an apparent murder-suicide in 2011.

German authorities and media had long labeled the assassination-style shootings as the “Doner murders”, over allegations that Turkish crime groups were to blame.

The report recommended that German police employ more officers with migrant background and that the force implement sensitization policies to intercultural issues.

“I’m pretty sure that, if a leading police investigator had had a Turkish background, investigating authorities would not have taken six years before seriously considering the possibility that racism was the motive,” Edathy concluded.

Over the years, Turkish homes, mosques, and associations located across Germany witnessed attacks thought to be brought on by xenophobic, Islamophobic and racist groups.

Germany is currently home to some 2.5 million Turks.
