The 72-year-old was arrested on the Greek Chios Island in the eastern Aegean.
“For at least three years, he photographed camps and other infrastructure of the (Greek) armed forces in Chios and was paid to give the material to Turkish nationals,” Greek police said in a statement on Saturday.
When he was arrested, he was reportedly carrying two cameras with photographs of Greek military camps on the island.
Police officers also found laptops, mobile phones, maps, and glasses with a built-camera, during a search of his house in Chios.
The arrest comes a week after two Greeks and two Turks of Kurdish origin were detained by the coast guard off the Chios island for transferring a large amount of weapons and explosives to Turkey.
Police also say they found a message in the 52-year-old’s email account, describing the recent arrests made by the coast guard.
According to officials, the German says he was first hired in 2010 to take photographs and his payments ranged between 500 and 1,500 euros (USD 665 to 1990) for each mission he completed.
Greece’s anti-terrorism squad has made several similar arrests so far.
Turkish media outlets have recently accused Greece of harboring terrorists. Greece’s foreign affairs ministry has slammed the accusations.
