At least three policemen have been killed in a drive-by shooting in Egypt, bringing to five the number of policemen killed in the country over the past 24 hours, local media reported.
Egypt’s official MENA news agency said that unknown gunmen opened fire on a police car patrolling a highway in the Suez Canal city of Ismailia early on Wednesday.
The attackers killed three policemen, including an officer. They later seized their weapons and fled.
On Tuesday, unknown attackers shot dead a policeman and an officer in separate attacks in the Suez Canal cities of Port Said and Ismailia.
According to reports quoting security officials, some 22 policemen have so far been killed in militant attacks since January 23.
An Al-Qaeda-linked group, Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, has claimed responsibility for most of the deadliest attacks in Egypt since the ouster of Mohamed Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically elected president. They said the attacks were in revenge for the government’s deadly crackdown on Morsi’s supporters.
Some 1,400 people have been killed in the crackdown, according to Amnesty International, while thousands were jailed.
Egypt has been experiencing unrelenting violence since July 3, when the army toppled Morsi, suspended the constitution and dissolved the parliament.
