There were 17 British writers on the 184 named ‘shortlist’, including Quentin
Blake, Meg Rosoff, Michael Morpurgo, Shirley Hughes, Michael Rosen
and David Almond.
My own favourite of Kuijer’s novels is his eccentric 2005 story Het Boek
Van Alle Dingen – The Book of Everything – set in 1951 and about
a frightened nine-year-old whose father is a religious maniac who beats his
wife. When Thomas befriends the ‘communist’ woman next door, he has the
first of his visitations from Jesus who says things like ‘I’ll never let
myself be nailed to the cross again. I just won’t. I’ve had enough of it.”
Thomas keeps a diary, his ‘book of everything’. The first thing he writes is
that when he grows up he wants to be happy. It’s an incredibly touching
story and Kuijer showed in his story the very “respect for children” that
helped him win this award.
Kuijer will be presented with his award on 28 May in Stockholm.
