QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) –
The man police say was shot inside a Quincy apartment building Thursday afternoon has died, Adams County State’s Attorney Jon Barnard said Friday morning.
The suspect, 44-year-old Vincent Carter, was arrested Friday without incident shortly before 11 a.m. at a resident on Quincy’s north side, according to Quincy Police Chief Rob Copley.
Carter was charged with first-degree murder Friday by the Adams County Circuit Court in the shooting death of 53-year-old Terry Williams.
Police responded to 219 S. 11th Street just after 3 p.m. Thursday. Police report there was an altercation and Carter shot Williams with a small caliber handgun.
Investigators said Carter and Williams knew each other, but they have yet to discuss a possible motive.
“This is not street violence per say,” Quincy Police Chief Rob Copley said. “These were people in a location who knew each other so it’s not like he’s stalking people on the street. So I want to relieve the fears in that manner.”
Still, neighbors were shocked to see a crime scene in their neighborhood.
“They had all of the caution signs up and everything, and I pulled in my driveway and the cops were telling me not to come through,” said Chelsie Myers.
Those with information regarding the case are asked to call the Quincy CrimeStoppers at 217-228-4474.
