Fierce fighting is underway between Kurdish forces and the Takfiri ISIL militants in the Syrian town of Ain al-Arab, known as Kobane to Kurds.
The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that the Kurds managed to force the terrorists to retreat in some areas they had entered.
However, the Takfiri militants are advancing into the southwest of Kobane, with several blasts reportedly heard in the strategic town.
The development comes as UN envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura has called on the international community to take immediate action to defend Kobane against the much better armed ISIL militants, who captured large amounts of heavy weaponry in a lightning offensive in neighboring Iraq in June.
“The world, all of us, will regret deeply if (ISIL) is able to take over a city which has defended itself with courage but is close to not being able to do so. We need to act now,” he said.
“The international community needs to defend them. The international community cannot sustain another city falling under (ISIL).”
The ISIL terror group launched its assault on the Kobane region three weeks ago, forcing 200,000 mainly Kurdish refugees to flee into neighboring Turkey.
According to the UK-based observatory, at least 412 people, more than half of them militants, have been killed in and around Kobane since the start of ISIL assault in mid-September.
The ISIL Takfiris have committed widespread acts of violence, including mass executions, abductions, torture and forcing women into slavery in the areas they have seized in Iraq and Syria.
