Northern Territory Police are yet to confirm if human remains found inside a crocodile are those of a missing seven-year-old girl.

The girl was reported to have been taken by a crocodile while swimming with her family at Gumarrirnbang outstation, about 110km south-west of Maningrida and 340km east of Darwin, on Friday afternoon.

Police say authorities shot a crocodile at the waterhole just before noon (local time) yesterday.

Human remains were found in the crocodile’s stomach when it was examined.

Senior Sergeant Shaun Gill says the matter is now before the coroner.

“There’s two phases to this – there’s the investigation phase, which is still undergoing,” he said.

“The next phase now is the phase that goes before the forensics testing and the coroner.”

Mr Gill said the remains still need to be identified.

“The police are still liaising with the community members,” he said

“There’s some difficulties with family members, as well, so we’re engaging with the community as much as we can and ensuring that everybody’s helpful.”
