Indigenous owners get historic handover

The Queensland government will formally hand over 75,000 hectares of land on Cape York to indigenous owners, ending a battle stretching over four decades.

Premier Campbell Newman will travel to Coen on Tuesday to attend a ceremonial transfer of the Mungkan Kandju National Park and large areas of freehold land to the Wik Mungkan people.

Former Premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen declared the area a national park in 1977, after the state government failed in its bid to prevent the Wik Mungkan people from buying the land.

The decision to hand the land to traditional owners was made by Anna Bligh, who described the episode as a “shameful chapter in Queensland’s indigenous history”.

The Wilderness Society’s indigenous conservation manager Anthony Esposito said the Tuesday was a “great day not only for Queensland but for Australia and for achieving real land justice”.

Land rights campaigner John Koowarta’s widow Martha will attend the ceremony.
