At least 13 people have been killed and thousands of others displaced as a result of flash flooding and landslides in northern Indonesia.
“Thirteen people were killed, two are missing, and 40,000 people have been evacuated,” Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said on Thursday.
Late Wednesday, people in the Sangihe district of northern Sulawesi Province were forced to leave their homes after flooding caused by torrential rain.
Over 1,000 houses were flooded by overflowing rivers in six of Sulawesi’s districts.
“Many people drowned or were buried by mud … they didn’t have time to save themselves,” the disaster agency’s provincial chief Noldy Liow said.
Five people lost their lives in the provincial capital, Manado. Five were also killed in landslides in Tomohon city while three others died in Minahasa district.
Officials say the death toll could rise as more rain is expected over the next few days.
During the annual rainy season, which peaks between December and February, Indonesia is prone to flooding, exacerbated by clogged rivers and sewers.
