Instagram blunder helps ID alleged thief

UPLOADING a “selfie” to social networking site Instagram has seen an alleged phone thief’s image go viral across the internet and find its way to police.

Paige Hatton’s phone went missing from a bar in Logan in southeast Queensland earlier this week.

After thinking it was gone for good, she received a shock when a friend told her to check her Instagram profile, where a young woman had uploaded a photo of herself and a man.

Figuring the happy snapper was responsible for taking her phone, Ms Hatton took to Facebook to ask for help identifying the culprit.

The picture has since gone viral, leading to the pair pictured being named and shamed.

Ms Hatton says she has since taken the evidence gathered online to the police in the hope of recovering her phone and, more importantly, its contents.

“The police have taken down everything that has happened and they put in a report I guess it’s just the waiting game now guys and thank u all once again,” she posted to Facebook.

Cara Hodges, who maintains one of the pages the image was shared on, said she was overwhelmed by the public’s response to the theft and consequent blunder.

“At first I thought it was hilarious and figured they must have thought they were uploading the picture to their own account but mistakenly used Paige’s,” Ms Hodges told AAP.

“But after Paige told me how important the photos are on her phone, I knew I had to help.”

Ms Hodges’ page, Logan Region Weather Photo & Info, has been inundated with hundreds of comments from people either identifying the pair in the picture or commenting on their apparent stupidity.

Comments have come from as far away as Sweden.

The picture has also been shared on several other sites.

Police investigations into the theft are under way.
