We are sure the Islamic Republic of Iran is against the production, storage and use of nuclear weapons, Pohamba said in a meeting with Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, ahead of the upcoming talks between Iran and the P5+1.
The Namibian leader said Iran regards the use of nuclear weapons as [religiously] forbidden, adding that Tehran’s nuclear energy program is in line with the country’s development and not with production of nuclear weapons.
The representatives of Iran and the P5+1- the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany- held the latest round of talks in the Turkish city of Istanbul on April 14.
Both sides expressed satisfaction with the general atmosphere of the negotiations and agreed to continue talks in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad in May.
Abdollahian, for his part, said Iran has always supported logical negotiations and treatment of nations with due dignity.
He also stressed the need for the peaceful application of nuclear technology and energy.
The US, Israel and some of their allies accuse Tehran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear energy program.
However, Iran has repeatedly dismissed allegations over its nuclear activities, arguing that as a committed signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it is entitled to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
