‘Iran can help Nigeria fight terrorism’

An Iranian deputy foreign minister says the Islamic Republic is ready to share its anti-terrorism know-how with Nigeria to secure the release of nearly 300 schoolgirls kidnapped by the Boko Haram Takfiri group, Press TV reports.

In an exclusive interview with Press TV on Saturday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said Tehran had held talks with Nigerian officials in recent days and condemned the abduction of 276 schoolgirls by the Boko Haram Takfiris in the African country.

“Given our experience in combating terrorism in our country, we are ready to supply the Nigerian officials with necessary consultation in this regard,” Amir-Abdollahian stated.

The Iranian official added that the Nigerian government had already taken “serious measures” to free the abducted girls, expressing hope for an end to such “acts of extremism” in West Africa and the entire continent.

On April 14, the militant group abducted 276 students from their secondary school in the northeastern town of Chibok in the Borno state and threatened later to “sell” the girls.

The government of Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has been under intense pressure by many groups of people around the globe, the girls’ families in particular, to secure their release.

On May 20, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham censured the abduction of the Nigerian girls, voicing Tehran’s preparedness to help Abuja resolve the issue.

Boko Haram – whose name means “Western education is forbidden” – says its goal is to overthrow the Nigerian government.

The group has been responsible for a number of deadly gun and bomb attacks in various parts of Nigeria since 2009.

Over the past four years, more than 3,500 people have been killed in violence in the north of Africa’s most populous country.
