Ayatollah Hossein Nouri-Hamedani called for a high turnout, saying that it is everyone’s duty to support the political establishment by casting votes in the upcoming elections.
“Elections are the stage [one can take to] to show the power of the establishment and people should participate in the polls with interest,” he said on Wednesday.
Ayatollah Nasser Makarem-Shirazi urged all eligible Iranians to take part in the elections, warning that Iran’s enemies desire a low turnout. The grand Ayatollah advised candidates not to sabotage one another’s campaign.
Also on Wednesday, Head of the Expediency Council, Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani, described the upcoming elections as the most significant vote in recent years.
In a meeting with members of political parties in Tehran, Rafsanjani urged all candidates to abide by the law and avoid disrespecting their rivals.
Ayatollah Rafsanjani said the candidates should only defend their own party’s agenda and avoid attacking other candidates to gain public vote.
Iran’s Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar said on Tuesday that more than 48 million people are eligible to vote in the elections.
Mohammad-Najjar told reporters over 5,400 had registered to contest 290 parliamentary seats.
Iran’s election supervisory body, the Guardian Council, vetted and approved the candidacy of 3,444 hopefuls across the country.
