“We are confident that … despite the organized plots against Iraq, the elected and legitimate government of the country under Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, and [the Iraqi] police and security forces will neutralize such acts of terror with vigilance and strength,” Amir-Abdollahian, Iran’s deputy foreign minister for Arab and African Affairs, said on Thursday.
At least 60 people were killed and dozens of others injured in shootings and bomb attacks in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad and the provinces of Diyala, Salahuddin and Babil on early Thursday morning.
The deadly attacks occurred during the morning’s rush hour in Baghdad when four car bombs, six roadside bombs and gunfire attacks killed at least 32 people and wounded dozens more.
The Iraqi interior ministry blamed al-Qaeda and affiliated armed groups for the attacks, which it said were an attempt to show that Iraq’s security situation was unstable.
Twenty two people were killed and several others injured in similar attacks in Baghdad and the cities of Baqouba and Samarra on February 19.
