Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power station was not damaged by the earthquake, an
official from the Russian company that built the plant told Reuters.
Last week, a smaller earthquake measuring 6.1 claimed 37 lives in Iran,
striking near Bushehr on the country’s Gulf coast.
The worst tremor in Iran’s recent history took place in 2003 when the city of
Bam – relatively near the location of today’s event – was devastated and
more than 30,000 people were killed. That earthquake measured 6.6 on the
Richter scale, considerably weaker than the event on Tuesday. However, Bam
was only six miles from the epicentre and the tremor also took place closer
to the surface.
The deadliest earthquake in Iran’s history took place in 1990 when a tremor
measuring 7.7 killed 37,000 people in Gilan and Zanjan provinces.
