A total of 200 lawmakers of the 290-member Majlis (parliament), in a statement released on Sunday, expressed hope that the new Egyptian president would achieve the goals pursued by revolutionary and freedom-loving forces through reliance on his nation.
The statement also read that victory of Morsi in Egypt’s presidential poll exhibited the strong resolve of Egyptians at a critical juncture of their country’s revolution.
The Majlis statement highlighted that, thanks to the Islamic Awakening movement, this was the first time the Egyptian president was elected by popular vote.
Iranian lawmakers expressed hope that the new Egyptian leader, by placing his trust in God and his nation, would realize the objectives of the revolution and Egypt would regain its influential position and significant role in the Muslim world, particularly its support for the Palestinian cause.
Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad congratulated Morsi over his victory as president of the “friend and brother” country of Egypt on June 25.
He highlighted the significance of strengthening Tehran-Cairo relations and wished success for the new Egyptian president and prosperity for the Egyptian people.
After days of delay, Egypt’s Supreme Presidential Electoral Commission (SPEC) on June 24 declared Morsi as the winner of the county’s presidential run-off.
Morsi picked up 13.2 million votes out of just over 26 million, giving him 51.7 percent of the vote. His competitor, Ahmed Shafiq, the last prime minister under Hosni Mubarak, received 12.3 million, handing him 48.3 percent of the vote.
