Abbasi was speaking in a meeting with Director General of the UN agency Yukiya Amano, who arrived in Tehran early Monday on a one-day visit ahead of the upcoming talks between Iran and the P5+1 –Britain, China, France, Russia, and the US plus Germany– in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad.
The AEOI head outlined the organization’s activities in different nuclear energy fields, including agriculture, medicine and industry.
Amano, for his part, said the IAEA would further expand cooperation with Iran in different fields.
He emphasized that the IAEA is carrying out many activities in various nuclear energy fields, including cancer treatment, food security and water supply.
The two sides also discussed other issues and presented proposals to resolve ambiguities and improve cooperation.
Amano arrived in Tehran, accompanied by the IAEA Deputy Director General for Safeguards Herman Nackaerts and the agency’s Assistant Director General for Policy Rafael Mariano Grossi, for talks with senior Iranian officials.
Speaking ahead of his departure for Tehran on Sunday in Vienna, the IAEA chief said he has a “positive” attitude about his discussions with the Iranian officials.
“There has been good progress during the recent rounds of discussions between Iran and IAEA. So I thought that now is the right time…to visit Iran and have direct talks with high officials of Iran…to reach agreement…I stay positive,” Amano said.
Iran and the IAEA resumed the two-day negotiations in Vienna, Austria, on May 14, three months after the last round of talks in the Iranian capital of Tehran.
The Islamic Republic and the UN nuclear agency held two rounds of talks in Tehran in January and February.
