Iraq awards $6 billion refinery contract to S. Korean consortium

BAGHDAD — Iraq has awarded South Korea a contract for the
construction of a refinery.

karbala_300Officials said the Baghdad government awarded a contract to a South Korean consortium for a refinery in the southern province of Karbala.

The 54-month engineering, procurement, and construction contract, valued at $6 billion, was awarded to a four-company consortium led by Hyundai Engineering & Construction.

The Karbala refinery was designed for an output of 140,000 barrels per day, which would also produce jet fuel.

Officials said Karbala was part of an Iraqi plan to construct four refineries and add a capacity of 750,000 barrels per day.

The Iraqi Oil Ministry said production from Karbala would feed the power station of Khayrat. The ministry has already awarded an EPC contract to Technip for Karbala.
